What changes the price

• Size. Set by what you want to run at once. Central air and electric heat push you up a size; a well pump changes the starting load (see the guide).
• Fuel. Natural gas is simplest where a line exists. Much of the Litchfield Hills has no gas service, so most units run on propane, which means a tank set by your propane dealer and a line to the generator.
• Distance. Long runs from the panel to the generator, or from the tank to the generator, add wire, pipe and trenching.
• Transfer switch. Whole-house automatic switches cost more than switches that cover selected circuits.
• Site work. Ledge, slopes, setbacks and wetlands review in some towns can add time and cost.

How to compare quotes

• Get a load calculation in writing, not a size picked from a brochure.
• Ask what the price includes: pad, transfer switch, permits, gas or propane piping, startup and the first service visit.
• Ask who coordinates the propane tank and whether the tank is sized for a multi-day outage.
• Ask about the maintenance plan and who services the unit after a storm when everyone is calling.
• The contract should carry the Connecticut license and registration numbers, and a three-day cancellation notice if you sign at home.
